The Dominion of New England was an administrative union of English colonies in the New England region of North America. It was created by King James II in 1686 to tighten control over the administrative affairs of the New England colonies and to enforce the Navigation Acts. It did not preserve existing colonial legislative assemblies, was not called into being by King Charles II, was not limited to New England (it eventually included New York and New Jersey), and did not declare the Navigation Acts null and void. Instead, it centralized governance and called for a single royal governor, Sir Edmund Andros, to oversee the entire Dominion.
