Most enslaved blacks lived on medium- to large-sized plantations, particularly in the Deep South. Small farms and urban areas did have some enslaved individuals, but the majority were in the plantation system. Additionally, while circumstances were certainly rigidly controlled, this is not a defining characteristic of where most enslaved individuals lived. Finally, while Virginia and the Carolinas were certainly home to many enslaved individuals, the Deep South (such as Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama) had the largest populations of enslaved individuals in the United States.
