A sequestration is a free fragment of a herniated disc that has broken off and moved away from the disc but is still within the spinal canal. A bulge is a generalized  protrusion or mild outpouching of the disc, while a protrusion is a more defined outpouching that extends beyond the border of the vertebral body. An extrusion is even more severe, as a piece of the disc has extended beyond the disc space and into the spinal canal or nerve root canal.
