GTP provides the energy for the formation of the initiation complex by binding to initiation factors. This facilitates the binding of the initiator tRNA to the start codon on the mRNA and the recruitment of the small ribosomal subunit to form the initiation complex. Once the initiation complex is formed, GTP is hydrolyzed to GDP and Pi which triggers the release of the initiation factors and allows the large ribosomal subunit to join the complex to start the process of elongation.
