Red-green colorblindness is X-linked recessive. A carrier mother has one normal X chromosome and one with the colorblindness gene. A normal vision father has only normal X chromosomes. Sons inherit their X chromosome from their mother and Y from their father, so they can be either normal vision (if they inherit the normal X) or colorblind (if they inherit the X with the colorblindness gene). Daughters inherit one X from each parent, so they will have normal vision since they will always receive at least one normal X chromosome, but they cannot be red-green colorblind because they would need two copies of the colorblind gene for that trait to be expressed.
