Eye-movement desensitization reprocessing therapy (EMDR) grew out of a five-year research project that compared the effectiveness of therapeutic techniques from different psychotherapy approaches. The research team developed the procedure for EMDR based on their analysis of the most effective techniques from psychoanalysis, behavior therapy, client-centered therapy, and cognitive therapy.
