Ketones can be prepared by the oxidation of secondary alcohols using oxidizing agents such as chromic acid (H2CrO4), Jones reagent (CrO3/H2SO4), or pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC). Primary alcohols can be oxidized to aldehydes, which can then be further oxidized to carboxylic acids, but not directly to ketones. Tertiary alcohols cannot undergo oxidation to ketones.
