Julius Caesar is most famous for being assassinated by a group of senators who feared his growing power and dictatorial rule. While he did become dictator with the initial support of the Senate, it was his eventual disregard for the Senate's authority and his attempts to become an absolute ruler that ultimately led to his downfall. While he did conquer many regions, including what is now France, he did not change their form of government. Additionally, while he did adopt Octavian (who later became Augustus) as his heir, he did not support his ideas to re-form a republic, but rather hoped for a continuation of his own rule through Octavian. Finally, the battle of Actium was actually won by Octavian, after Caesar's death.
