The X and Y chromosomes segregate during meiosis in germ-line cells. During meiosis I, homologous chromosomes (which includes one X and one Y chromosome in males) pair up and separate, resulting in two haploid cells each with one copy of either the X or Y chromosome. This is known as reductional division. Meiosis II is similar to mitosis and results in four haploid cells, each with one copy of either the X or Y chromosome.
