Gender and sex are not unique concepts. Sex is the biological and physiological characteristics that define males and females, whereas gender is the socially constructed roles, behaviors, and identities that are associated with being male or female. Gender is not an achieved status because it is not something that individuals can work towards or earn. It is an ascribed status that is assigned at birth based on biological sex.
