In the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone mechanism, low blood pressure stimulates specialized tubular cells in the kidneys to produce the enzyme renin. Renin acts on a plasma protein to produce angiotensin I. Angiotensin I circulates through the body to the lungs; here the pulmonary vascular endothelium produces angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), which acts on angiotensin I to produce angiotensin II. Angiotensin II is a powerful vasoconstrictor that raises blood pressure significantly. Angiotensin II also raises blood pressure in another way: it causes the adrenal cortex to secrete aldosterone, which acts on the kidney tubules to increase their reabsorption of sodium ions and, consequently, water. The overall effect is an increase in circulating blood volume and pressure.
