Common schools, also known as public schools, existed in every northern state by the time of the Civil War. This was due in part to the efforts of Horace Mann and other education reformers who pushed for free, universal education as a means of promoting social mobility and democracy. Common schools were intended to provide basic education to all children regardless of their social class, and were seen as a way to prepare the next generation for participation in an increasingly industrial and democratic society. While there was some opposition to common schools from labor unions and others who believed that children should be working rather than learning, the concept of public education ultimately won widespread support in the North.
