During gas exchange, body cells release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the bloodstream and take up oxygen (O2) from the bloodstream. This is because the cells require O2 for cellular respiration, which produces energy for the cell, and they produce CO2 as a waste product. Red blood cells transport O2 from the lungs to the body cells, and carbon dioxide from the body cells back to the lungs to be exhaled. The cells do not take up CO2 from the red blood cells, but rather release it to them, while they take up O2 from the red blood cells. The cells do not increase in size to accommodate the reuptake of O2 during gas exchange.
