They were brought to Brazil in the 1950s in an attempt to create a bee species that was better suited for tropical conditions and increased honey production. However, a few bees escaped and bred with local bee species, resulting in the aggressive, hybrid Africanized bee. They have since spread to many countries in Central and South America.
