This is followed by a growth phase as consumer knowledge and demand increases, a maturity phase where sales peak, and a decline phase as the product becomes obsolete or replaced by newer technology. The PLC in Figure 11-2 shows a typical high-learning product life cycle, with the introduction phase lasting from year 0 to year 3, the growth phase from year 3 to year 6, the maturity phase from year 6 to year 9, and the decline phase from year 9 to year 12. Fad products have a very short life cycle, usually less than a year, and are quickly replaced by the next trend. Fashion products have a longer life cycle than fads, but still tend to be more cyclical in nature and subject to changing consumer preferences.
