Chloride ions move into red blood cells (RBCs) in the tissues to maintain electrical neutrality as bicarbonate ions exit the RBCs. In the lungs, chloride ions move out of RBCs as bicarbonate ions re-enter the RBCs to be converted back to carbon dioxide for exhalation. This process is known as the chloride shift or Hamburger phenomenon.
