Feedback inhibition is a regulatory mechanism in which the product of a metabolic pathway inhibits an enzyme that is involved in the pathway. This helps to regulate the amount of product produced and prevent excess accumulation. It often involves allosteric enzymes, which have an active site and an allosteric site that can be modulated by binding of other molecules. The inhibition can occur at any step in the pathway, not just the last one. It does not raise the activation energy for the reaction, but rather decreases the rate of the reaction.
