Folate is important for the synthesis of DNA, and a deficiency in this vitamin can result in megaloblastic anemia. This type of anemia is characterized by the presence of large, immature, red blood cells known as megaloblasts which often have a shorter lifespan than healthy red blood cells resulting in a decrease in the number of circulating mature red blood cells.
