Cyclothymic disorder is a type of mood disorder that involves chronic mood disturbances characterized by numerous periods of hypomanic symptoms and numerous periods of depressive symptoms that persist for at least two years in adults and one year in adolescents and children. It is less severe than bipolar disorder but can still cause impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. It is diagnosed if present for a two-year period.
