The Answer is Carthage was an ancient city-state located in what is now Tunisia, North Africa. It was founded by Phoenician settlers from Tyre (modern-day Lebanon) around the 9th century BCE. Carthage became a major power in the western Mediterranean, engaging in trade and establishing colonies throughout the region. It is perhaps best known for its conflicts with the Roman Republic, known as the Punic Wars, which took place over a period of more than a century (264-146 BCE).

The city's strategic location and its control over maritime trade routes allowed it to flourish economically. Carthage was also renowned for its formidable navy and for the practice of seafaring and commerce. The Carthaginians were skilled merchants and sailors, and their influence extended into the Atlantic and throughout the Mediterranean.

The most famous Carthaginian is Hannibal Barca, a military commander who famously crossed the Alps with his army and war elephants to fight the Romans in the Second Punic War. Despite initial successes, including the Battle of Cannae in 216 BCE, Hannibal was eventually defeated by the Romans.

The Third Punic War resulted in the complete destruction of Carthage in 146 BCE. The Romans razed the city, and according to legend, they sowed the land with salt to ensure that nothing would grow there again. The site of Carthage was later rebuilt by the Romans and became an important city in the Roman Empire.

Today, the ruins of Carthage are a UNESCO World Heritage site and continue to be an important archaeological and historical site, offering insights into Phoenician and ancient Mediterranean civilizations.
