The primary role of the circulatory system is to deliver oxygenated blood and nutrients to the body's tissues through the arterial system. Blood picks up oxygen from the lungs,  and nutrients from the digestive system primarily through absorption from the small intestine. The circulatory system is also necessary for bringing metabolic byproducts such as carbon dioxide (CO2) from the tissues back to the lungs through the venous system. The lungs can then exhale and remove CO2 and prevent the buildup of CO2 in the body.  Other body systems use the circulatory system as well because it is the best way to deliver substances to many locations throughout the body. For this reason, the endocrine system, which produces and secretes hormones, uses the circulatory system to transport hormones throughout the body.
