The ovaries are located in the female pelvic region and have the primary role of releasing eggs every month during menstruation. In addition, they produce and release estrogen, which is the primary female reproductive hormone. Ovaries exist in pairs, with one on each side of the uterus.
The uterus is the pear shaped organ located centrally in the pelvis, which is where a fertilized egg will implant and develop into a fetus. The uterus is lined with the endometrium, which thickens every month in preparation for implantation of an embryo. If fertilization does not occur, the lining is not needed and the endometrium will shed during menstruation.
In order for an egg to travel from the ovaries to the uterus, it must travel down the Fallopian tubes, or oviducts.
