As blood leaves the heart via the aorta (specifically the ascending aorta) some blood will enter the more superior branches. However some blood also continues traveling down the descending aorta, which becomes the thoracic aorta, and then the abdominal aorta. The abdominal aorta then splits into two larger arteries, the right and left iliac arteries, which supply blood to the lower extremities.
The carotid, brachial, and axillary arteries are all found in the upper extremities of the body and do not supply blood to the lower extremities.
