Since one of the primary roles of the circulatory system is to deliver oxygenated blood to the body's tissues, the circulatory system must be closely related to the pulmonary system. The pulmonary system is responsible for taking oxygen into the body through the lungs and allowing it to diffuse into the blood. The pulmonary system is also needed for ridding the body of carbon dioxide (CO2). When CO2 is produced in the body's tissues, venous blood brings it back to the heart first, then the blood goes to the lungs where CO2 can diffuse from the blood to the lungs to be exhaled.
While all the body's organ systems are interrelated to some extent, the circulatory system and the pulmonary system are equally reliant on each other. Sometimes they are referred to collectively as the cardiorespiratory system.
