The heart is a muscular pump, which is composed of specialized cardiac muscle called myocardium (myo= muscle, cardium= heart). The heart is divided into two sides, the right side which pumps blood to the lungs, and the left side which pumps blood to the entire body. The two sides are separated by a thick muscular wall called the septum. More specifically, it can be called the interventricular septum, where the thick tissue can be seen between the right and left ventricles.
The chordae tendinae are tendinous cords that hold the valves in place, and are not composed of muscle tissue.
The pericardium is not muscle tissue, but a connective tissue that surrounds the outside of the heart (peri= around). This layer provides protection and stability for the heart. The pericardium is composed of two layers: an outer fibrous layer and an inner, or visceral layer called the serous pericardium. The space between the two layers is called the pericardial cavity.
The epicardium is sometimes used synonymously with the term pericardium, as it describes an outer protective layer of the heart. However, it more specifically refers to the inner layer of the pericardium.
