Stage IV cancer indicates the tumor has spread to other parts of the body, known as distant metastasis. It does not matter what size the original tumor is. Stages III, II, and I indicate progressively less advanced cancer, with Stage 0 indicating in situ cancer (the tumor has not invaded surrounding tissue).
