Originally, it was thought that it might aid in healing after NSPT if all sites where treated at the same appointment(s) and disinfected with chlorhexidine in an effort to prevent reinfection of untreated sites with periodontal pathogens from untreated sites. It was being compared with traditional scaling and root planing by quadrant. Components of full-mouth disinfection (FMD) have been added to enhance the disinfection aspect of the therapy, such as treatment of the tongue, buccal mucosa, and tonsillar regions with chlorhexidine to thoroughly disinfect the oral cavity. It has not been demonstrated to be more efficacious then quadrant scaling and root planing or full-mouth scaling and root planing without disinfection. There is no evidence at this time that indicates it is less time-consuming or less of a financial burden to the client. Evidence does not address the use of antimicrobial therapy as an adjunct to initial therapy in FMD. To date, healing by quadrant scaling and root planing and FMD are equal, so it would seem that antimicrobial therapy after initial therapy might be used as an adjunct at the reevaluation or PM visit(s) with either strategy of periodontal debridement. Limited evidence to date does not show a clear advantage over tractional scaling and root planing alone but further study is occurring comparing FMD, full-mouth periodontal debridement, and quadrant or segmental periodontal debridement. Evidence has not demonstrated the time comparison to traditional methods for the practitioner.
