Whilst the researchers who conducted the Hawthorne Studies were highly critical of Taylorism and one of the outcomes of the Hawthorne Studies was to stress the importance of the social side of the organization, the ultimate aim of the research was, just like Taylorism, to increase the efficiency of work. Therefore whilst it had differences with Taylorism in how they went about achieving efficiency, the goal was still the same.
From a critical viewpoint Mayo's views therefore are less distinct from Taylor's as they initially appear. Indeed his approach could be seen as a more subtle form of control.
