There are two ways in which the phrase the 'Hawthorne Effect' has been used. One was coined by Henry Landsberger who argued that the very fact of observing someone changes their behaviour. The scientists who observed the workers at the Hawthorne plant interacted with them and many of the workers wanted to do well for them. The second meaning is from the findings of the experiment, that social and psychological factors are central to people's levels of motivation and productivity at work.
