Syntenic blocks tell us about the evolutionary history of organisms. Genes that are found in the same block in multiple organisms are likely to have been in the same block throughout evolutionary history, but not necessarily in the same arrangement. The ancestor of human and mice probably had the same syntenic blocks, but not in the same chromosomal arrangement as is seen in either human or mouse today.
