In ascomycete fungi, the haploid spores produced after meiosis are held together, so researchers can isolate and analyze the four products in the knowledge that they were produced by the same meiotic event. Haploid fungal spores can grow (no fertilization is necessary) and therefore they can be analyzed directly.
