Meiotic recombination is initiated by SPO11 making a double-stranded break (step1) in the DNA (duplex 1). One end of the broken DNA from duplex 1 then invades the duplex of a sister chromatid of the opposing homologue (duplex 2), displacing the DNA (step 2). The displaced loop of duplex 2 is then 'captured' by duplex 1. DNA synthesis then occurs in both duplexes to fill in the gaps (step 3). A double Holliday junction forms, which is then resolved to form a crossover (step 4).
