Including a replication in the design helps to control for potential confounding variables that may have affected the results in the initial intervention. Maturation influences and history effects can still be present, but including a replication allows for stronger conclusions to be drawn about the effectiveness of the intervention. Using only one group would not allow for comparisons to be made between the pre- and post-intervention periods.
