Placenta succenturia is an abnormal condition where an accessory lobe of placenta is connected by an artery or vein to the main placenta. While usually not injurious to the fetus, this condition can cause hemorrhage during delivery. The placenta is said to be retained when it is not expelled shortly after delivery. Placenta accreta is a rare condition in which the placenta attaches too deeply into the uterine wall (and can cause vaginal bleeding in the third trimester and severe blood loss after delivery). In the case of placenta accreta, a cesarean section is often recommended.
