IPV is the result of threatened or actual physical abuse, a pattern of behavior in which the victim is repeatedly physically assaulted by her or his partner. Other terms for IPV include domestic violence, spouse abuse, and battered spouse syndrome.
Victims of IPV in heterosexual and homosexual relationships are most frequently female. The victim may have evidence of bruising in various stages of healing, usually in an area of the body that is concealed by clothing. She or he has a tendency to avoid eye contact with the examiner.
IPV is a complex issue; no one specific cause is known. Stress is suggested as an important factor, along with alcohol ingestion and possible intoxication. Cultural and societal values that made wives their husbands' "property" and the mindset that women are expected to be submissive to their mates have contributed to spouse abuse. Some women are victimized because they do not have the physical or emotional strength that their partners do. Many of these victims have low self-esteem that adds to their inability to escape the victimization. Women can be the abusers also, and some women abuse their partners even to the point of dismemberment or setting the partner on fire or murder. It is believed that many of these cases are retaliation for battering that has been received.
