A schema is a cognitive framework used to organize information. Schemas use existing information as a shortcut for processing new information. In this example, Ingrid has developed a schema for identifying a dog. This schema is probably very useful. Whether she meets a German shepherd or a Yorkshire terrier, she recognizes that it is a dog without having to relearn what makes a dog, a dog.
