Mark Twain's 1884 masterpiece, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, is widely considered the first "Great American Novel." It was the sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876). Twain was also considered the greatest humorist of his day. He was the first American author to write on American subjects in a uniquely American vernacular, for which he is regarded as the "Father of American Literature," as William Faulkner once heralded him. In The Innocents Abroad, he made clear his view that America need not take a backseat to Europe, either culturally or in any other vein. His was an America that was beginning to come of age.
