In the epigraph to Gone with the Wind, Margaret Mitchell painted a romantic version of the Old South, in which the men and women were gallant knights and fair ladies, and the cotton fields were a setting on par with Camelot. The epigraph concludes by wistfully cautioning, "Look for it only in books, for it is no more than a dream remembered. A civilization gone with the wind..." The novel was published in 1936 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year. In 1939, it was made into a film, which was showered with Academy Awards and is as well regarded as its written counterpart. It nevertheless remains a controversial novel for its racial themes, of which slavery was only one.
