Singer-songwriter Bob Dylan was an instant icon upon his early '60s popular debut, and he has retained legendary status ever since, commonly heralded as the "Poet of His Generation." Dylan's lyrics are akin to free verse poetry set to a melody. His songs were much longer than the rock ditties of his day, which were intentionally short. At the onset of his career, Dylan was considered a protest singer because he wrote about many of the political issues of his day.
