W. E. B. Du Bois was the African-American civil rights leader who convened the Niagara Movement in 1905 (with co-founder William Monroe Trotter), which ultimately led to the organization of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, or NAACP, in 1911. A century later, the group remains the most prominent advocacy group for African-Americans in the country. Du Bois and the Niagara Movement (so named because of their first meetings on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, due to segregation in the hotels on the U.S. side) were opposed to the more moderate and compromising positions championed in other corners of the civil rights movement, including those of Booker T. Washington.
