Though Chinese immigrants were initially considered undesirable laborers, they quickly proved themselves adept on Transcontinental Railroad projects. The Central Pacific section of the track through the Sierra Nevada Mountains was almost entirely constructed by Chinese immigrants, many of whom were recruited directly by the railroad company and immigrated specifically to work on the project. They were often tasked with handling the highly volatile chemical explosives used to blow tunnels through the mountains.
