Legislation in the 1870s and 1880s restricted emigration from Asia in general, and from China in particular. The Page Act of 1875 limited the types of people from Asia who could move to the United States, barring criminals, sex workers, and contract laborers. Then in 1882, Congress passed the Chinese Exclusion Act, which suspended Chinese immigration altogether. The act was written to last 10 years but was renewed twice, in 1892 and 1902, after which it was allowed to expire.
