America's first "unknown soldier" to be laid to rest in the national monument called the Tomb of the Unknowns (or the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) died while in service during World War I. A decorated sergeant who also served in World War I was tasked with choosing one casket from a selection of four unidentified American casualties to be entombed in the new national monument. The entombing of an unidentified soldier became an American tradition after each of the successive three wars in which the nation battled -World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
