Each country that fought in World War II belonged to one of two alliances: the Allied Powers or the Axis Powers. The Allies were led by the United States, the Soviet Union, and the United Kingdom; China was a major player in the alliance, which began in 1941 with 26 member nations. At the time the formal alliance began, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed that they operate under the name, the United Nations. By the end of the war, 51 nations were a part of the alliance, and they began the international institution of the same name.
