The United Nation's Genocide Convention of 1948 was one of the first resolutions of the new United Nations. It was largely a reaction to the atrocities perpetrated by the Nazis in their concentration camps before and during World War II. The convention officially defined what acts constitute genocide and established that the organization would take steps to stop any party responsible for perpetrating genocidal acts. The (Fourth) Geneva Convention of 1949 was not a United Nations treaty, though many of its member states participated in the process. The Potsdam Agreement, which outlined the rebuilding process and governance of Germany following the war, was likewise not a U.N. treaty, and it only involved the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Soviet Union.
