Oresteia, written by Aeschylus around 458 BCE, is the only surviving example from the ancient period of plays presented in trilogy format. The three plays of the trilogy-Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides-are tragedies. Aeschylus pioneered the tragedy genre, and he focused extensively on the theme of evil, particularly in religious terms. Though there are no other surviving dramatic trilogies, modern-day academics know that the format was common in classical Greece through the accounts recorded by ancient scholars in which they described seeing trilogies presented. Some works by other ancient Greek authors ultimately became parts of trilogies (or are now recognized as parts of trilogies), but Oresteia was the only work presented as a trilogy at the time it was written.
