Pericles was the foremost (though not exclusive) leader during the Athenian Golden Age, which occurred from approximately 480 to 404 BCE. Pericles himself lived from 495 to 429 BCE. The Golden Age occurred between the Persian War and the end of the second phase of the Peloponnesian War, when Athens thrived under a democratic political structure and a period of great artistic and academic accomplishment. He is so closely associated with the success of the period that the Golden Age is also commonly referred to as the Age of Pericles. He is considered the greatest democratic statesman of Ancient Greece.
