Spartacus was one of the leaders of a slave uprising against the Roman Republic around 109 BCE. He was a Thracian, a tribe of people that was mostly nomadic within the Central and Southeastern regions of Europe. He may have fought with the Romans during some of their numerous military campaigns prior to his leadership in the uprising. At some point, he was enslaved and likely forced into gladiator competitions. His army was defeated by the Romans in 71 BCE at the final battle of the Third Servile War, in which Spartacus was killed.
