Julius Caesar, Marcus Crassus and Pompey the Great formed the First Triumvirate in 60 BCE to govern the Roman Republic during a pivotal period of Rome's history as it vacillated between dictatorship, republic and empire. Legally, the alliance was not a triumvirate because certain protocol were not followed in its formation, but it was and is generally regarded as a triumvirate nonetheless. Crassus and Pompey shared the consulship of Rome after it was reinstated (following the dictatorship of Sulla) in 70 BCE. However, the two men were suspicious of each other, which allowed Caesar the opportunity to involve himself in their affairs and orchestrated their alliance so that he could ultimately take the consulship for himself, which he did in 59 BCE. The political arrangement lasted until 53 BCE, when Marcus Crassus died.
