Just prior the alliance between Octavian and Marc Antony (the Second Triumvirate) ended in 32 BCE over Antony's jealousy at Caesar naming Octavian his heir, Antony aligned with Cleopatra VII, the Ptolemaic pharaoh of Egypt. Cleopatra had been Caesar's lover and the mother of his son Caesarion, but the romantic relationship is believed to have been the byproduct of their political alliance. Antony and Cleopatra are believed to have harbored true affection for one another in addition to maintaining a political alliance between Egypt and a faction of Rome. They married and had three children. However, Octavian's army ultimately defeated them in 31 BCE.
